6 month update

20 Nov

Harlow was 6 months old on the 11th. I cannot believe how fast that time went by. I feel like she is changing every day. Since the 6 month mark (so 10 days!) she is:

-army crawling across the room
-pulling up to a stand
-Sitting (but not for long–she would rather crawl)
-Eating a few solids – so far, pumpkin, sweet potato, banana, and carrots. (She’s also tried the crust of Orrin’s sandwich, (from the floor) much to my dismay.)
-saying “mama” when she wants me to pick her up (and sometimes just for fun). We’ve heard “dada” and “baba” a few times too, but it’s mostly mama right now.
-fighting sleep til 10pm on average! Ugh!
-passing things back and forth between her hands and turning things around and around to study them from all angles. This is something I don’t remember Orrin doing at all. 🙂 She can also pick up tiny little things already.
-oh and I swear she is signing milk, after I showed her a few times!

I am way behind on sharing pictures here, so here are a bunch before I have to empty my phone again. 🙂

Orrin update

20 Nov

Orrin is so big these days.

He’s finally getting his language down, although he still has some quirks. Like “bee-da-doo” (video). He has him/her and his/hers reversed most of the time, but getting better. And sometimes he gets his sentence structure a little backwards, like “that toy I want.” (Yoda style)

In general, his threenager stage seems to be waning, although we still have some days.

More Orrin stories I’ve been collecting over the last month or so:

Awhile back, Orrin was using this growly/angry voice and said, “Let me see that sweetie girl!” (He wanted to see Harlow)

When he pretends to be Woody, my cowboy name is “Coway.” The other day in the car, he was wearing his Woody hat and randomly said: “Coway, I got my Bullseye in the back trunk.” (Bullseye is woody’s horse)

The other night while eating dinner: “look Friends and boy watching their tiny one movie…”

(Holding up his thumb) “Look mama, this one doesn’t fit in there!” (Pointing to nose)

(Whispering)
Orrin: I love you mama
Me: I love you too.
Orrin: and I love you too!

Me: someday Harlow will be 3 like you are…and you’ll be 6!
Orrin: (pause) That’s very strange.

(Holding up his glass) “Let’s do chairs” (cheers!)

Quick updates

8 Oct

I am way, way behind and have no hope of catching up the way I want to, so I’m just writing something! Some of this is notes I’ve been writing over the last few weeks.

Orrin quotes:

“That’s the sound of the Internet!”

Me: “Harlow’s getting bigger, isn’t she!”
Orrin: “yeah and I’m getting bigger!”
Me: “that’s right!”
O: “and mama’s getting bigger…
Me: “well, hopefully not!” 🙂
O: “YES mama IS getting bigger!”

“Look mama, I found a burger in my pocket” (pretending!)

Pretending that he is wearing “Santa clothes” (while actually completely naked). At bedtime, when it was time to put pajamas on, he carefully removed the imaginary Santa suit, including his mustache.

Still says “super-han” (superman)

“I like this van mama” (while driving) Saying “I like that” to lots of things…my new baby carrier…my clothes, etc. Also, “I like this baby!” And he told me he liked me the other day too.

Saying “I love you” regularly and also talks about people who love him. Hugs his friend Griffin and tells him he loves him.

Talking about his “superhero birthday” quite a bit. We know what kind of party he’ll be having.

Harlow updates:

Rolling from back to belly! Scooting all around the floor.

Laughing almost regularly. Still super super hard to amuse! She mostly laughs at Orrin, and usually only one or two little giggles before she’s over it.

Finally wearing her 3-6 month clothes, but most of it is too long still.

No longer in that sweet cuddly baby stage…wants to look around, grab things, wiggle! She’s been “jumping” (pushing her feet against my leg, the chair, whatever) while nursing, then gets mad when she loses her latch.

My sweet girl has learned to put her pacifier in her own mouth. She’s also trying really hard to roll from back to belly! (She has belly to back mastered.) I’m still trying to get a laugh out of her. She just cocks an eyebrow at me when I start acting silly.

My Orrin is so big and suddenly talking so much. It’s so fun to hear his thoughts. He’s also reached that stage where he points out everything…like “look mama, his pants are dirty!” When he sees a guy with muddy pants in Walmart. The other day he hit me on the butt, and when I protested, he said very matter-of-fact, “daddy hits you butt.” How do you explain that one? 😉

Today he was looking through a catalog of pretty educational toys while I was nursing Harlow. He kept muttering “oh my god” about various toys. And then “oh my god…it’s so CUTE” about a truck of some kind. haha

At bath time, he said “remember? the purple one is forty bucks.” It took me a second to figure out what the heck he was talking about, but then I realized he had seen the box of hair dye on the counter, and was remembering helping me pick the color. He really wanted me to get purple hair, but in the end I picked something a little more tame. Apparently he thought I skipped it because it was too expensive. I think we said that we couldn’t get a toy because it was “40 bucks” once, and now he associates that with everything that’s too expensive. I guess he thought that was why I decided not to get purple hair. (lol)

His imagination is really in overdrive. He is constantly handing me imaginary things and “friends and boy” are usually around. They were apparently hitting my butt the other day (with sound effects made by Orrin) and also got a timeout. It was both hilarious and a little sad to watch him discipline them. He put them on my shoulder for timeout and then with lots of huffing and groaning, picked them up off the floor and put them back on time out. He sounded pretty much just like me. 🙂

He’s very interested in friends lately. He listed off several people that are his friends (like family members and our midwife, Patricia). He and Griffin are very good friends now, and usually do the epic run towards each other, sometimes a hug–when they see each other. It’s so cute. Pretty sure they are going to have coordinating Halloween costumes too.

Falling asleep at my “keyboard” (phone version) so…more tomorrow?

I have so much to write down but too tired tonight. 🙂

7 Sep

It’s been awhile.

I’ve been busy…

20130906-231204.jpg

dealing with that ^ attitude and three year old angst. (Also why you’ve seen so few pictures of Orrin lately.) 😉

And sometimes…

20130906-231629.jpg

entranced by this armful of sweetness who rarely wants to be put down.

I’ve been bad at taking pictures lately too. At least for my standards. I have been a little preoccupied lately with the speed at which time is flying – how fast these two beings are growing. Some part of me seems to believe that if I capture enough of the moments, maybe I will be able to have them back someday.

But of course it is never the same.

I won’t get to hear Orrin telling Jesse that we went to blockbuster “last night” (we didn’t) or asking to go to the movie, burrito, or ice cream house. I won’t get to feel the amazing velvet of Harlow’s skin or kiss her sweet milky cheeks as she cries “mama” (true story).

I want to stop time, sometimes.

20130906-235748.jpg
The other night, Orrin told me he loved me for the first time, unprompted. This was worthy of its own blog post, seeing as I waited more than three and a half years for that moment, but as usual lately, sleep took precedence. Anyway, we were just brushing his teeth, and when we started walking to his room, he said “I wuv you mama.” Be still my heart. This was followed the next morning by wake up hugs and I-love-you’s for both me and daddy. The three year old angst just may be starting to pass.

He has grown so much in the last four months since Harlow was born!

20130907-000452.jpg

Where to start with this girl! She is grabbing everything! Found her toes. Found her voice. Takes a lot of catnaps right now. She holds on to my finger every time she nurses. She is generally not so cranky these days, but still a bit of a mama’s girl. Which, I’ll admit, is kind of a welcome change, since Orrin has always been such a fan of his dad. 🙂

More pictures…(but not enough!)

This girl had a rough couple of days. A tummy thing maybe combined with a cold? She was up in the night two nights in a row, crying with gas and spitting up like crazy. Poor baby. She’s finally getting back to normal.

Quick updates:

Orrin has been saying so many hilarious things, but I can’t ever remember them by the end of the day. Actually I’m having trouble keeping track of anything lately. Like I I couldn’t find my keys and then realized I left them in the ignition of the van overnight. Oops.

Orrin has his first really good friend–his name is Griffin. They are sooo cute and get so excited every time they see each other. He talks about Griffin all the time.

Harlow is grabbing at everything, rolling over from her tummy, chewing on her fingers a lot. She’s been pretty fussy the last few days…particularly right when I decide to go to bed! It’s been frustrating. We also got the tiniest of giggles out of her yesterday, but she is seriously hard to amuse! 🙂

Updates…

We had a nursing marathon the last couple of days! I feel like this week just got away from me and I think it may have something to do with the growth spurt aka constant nursing. I honestly don’t know where she fit all that milk. 😉

She’s been getting mad at me quickly, if I don’t immediately start feeding her. And then this indignant little huff before she latches on, like surely I didn’t need to deprive her of her precious milk for SO long (like an hour since her last feeding). On the other hand, when I happen to be already sitting down, ready to nurse, she will give me big smiles when I start pulling up my shirt. haha

I got a baby nail clipper today because she has started scratching everyone! I literally clipped her finger on the first squeeze. It didn’t bleed, but she cried SO hard. Traumatized for life (I mean me). I think I’ll stick to just biting them off while she’s nursing!

Orrin continues to be a threenager, but he’s maybe a little bit less emotional. Although today we had to run into Walmart and left without going to see the toys. This was hard for him. He cried and cried, even though I found him some batman jammies on sale for $3.50 (Lets not talk about how they’re size 5t and fit fine). He was rotating through reasons for his sobbing as we started to leave the parking lot. “But I want…” Was the main theme. First toys, then a movie, then mints (lol because I’d mentioned getting some at the check stand), and then, in full on sobbing meltdown mode: “but I wanna get SHOES!!!”

I laughed. I felt bad because he was genuinely upset, but it was sooo random.

He was pretty quiet all afternoon and then started sneezing a ton and got a runny nose. Then Harlow started sneezing, shortly followed by me. Oh man. This should be fun…
